The instrument cluster is far more than a display unit: in many vehicles it houses the immobiliser transponder and communicates via CAN-Bus with all relevant control units. A fault — pixel failure, dead warning lights, or a speedometer that refuses to move — has a direct impact on driving safety and roadworthiness.
Many faults can be resolved at PCB level. Where replacement is necessary, correct coding via manufacturer diagnostics (XENTRY, ODIS, ISTA) is essential — otherwise the immobiliser remains active or other control units generate permanent fault messages.
The speedometer is stuck at 0 km/h. Common causes: speed sensor failure, CAN-Bus fault, or an internal ECU failure within the instrument cluster itself.
Individual indicators (coolant, oil pressure, ABS, ESP) no longer illuminate. Typically a pixel or LED defect on the PCB — repairable without replacement.
Missing pixel rows or columns in the LCD panel. Typical on Mercedes W210, W211, Opel Vectra. Solder fault on the flat-flex cable or display controller.
Fuel level, coolant temperature or fuel consumption show unrealistic values. Sensor fault or disturbed CAN-Bus communication with the engine ECU.
After a cluster replacement the mileage no longer matches. The replacement unit must be correctly coded via manufacturer-level diagnostics.
The instrument cluster contains the immobiliser transponder (particularly Mercedes FBS1/FBS2). Replacement requires a re-learn procedure using the original manufacturer software.
| Make | Models | Known Issues & Characteristics |
|---|---|---|
| Mercedes | W210, W211, W203, W204 | Pixel failure in the display (speedo LCD), immobiliser in the cluster (FBS1/FBS2), re-learn procedure via the original Mercedes diagnostic system |
| VW / Audi | Golf 4/5, Passat B5/B6, A4 B6/B7 | Cluster removal required for pixel repair, odometer faults, EEPROM alignment via the original VW/Audi diagnostic system |
| BMW | E46, E39, E90 / E60 | On-board computer LED failure, cluster replacement: VIN coding via the original BMW diagnostic system, speedometer cluster special mechanics |
| Opel | Vectra B/C, Astra G/H | Pixel defects (known on Vectra), cluster replacement: Tech2 re-learn or OBD method |
Full ECU scan: communication faults with the instrument cluster? Self-stored fault codes in the cluster? CAN-Bus faults ruled out as the root cause.
Remove the instrument cluster. Inspect the PCB under magnification: cold solder joints, corroded contacts, damaged SMD components, capacitors.
Pixel repair (re-soldering the flat-flex cable), component replacement on the PCB, or full replacement with a donor unit. Decision based on findings.
The replacement unit must be VIN-coded and, if applicable, coupled to the immobiliser. Manufacturer diagnostics required depending on the vehicle. Odometer reading entered correctly.
All gauges checked: speedometer, rev counter, fuel level, temperature, warning lights. CAN-Bus communication with all control units verified.
For PCB-level repairs (pixel repair, solder-joint faults, component replacement) you can send the cluster to us — no need to bring the vehicle.
Important: include the vehicle type, year of manufacture and a precise fault description. Where an immobiliser re-learn procedure is required, the vehicle on site may be necessary — we clarify this with you in advance.
